At least 29 people were hurt when the Islamabad Express train went off the tracks near Kala Shah Kaku in Punjab’s Sheikhupura district on Friday, August 1, according to a report by Dawn.
Punjab Rescue 1122 said that five train carriages derailed near a chemical plant in the Kala Shah Kaku area. The control room got emergency calls at about 7:32 pm, and rescue teams quickly went to the scene.
"Six emergency vehicles and 25 rescuers were sent right away to help. Most passengers had minor injuries like scratches and bruises," said Punjab Rescue spokesperson Farooq Ahmed, as quoted by Dawn.
Rescue workers gave first aid to 22 people at the site, while seven others were taken to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Muridke for more treatment. "Two people were trapped in the train cars, but they were rescued and sent to the hospital," the statement said. "One of them had a hip injury."
"The main rescue operation is finished, and so far, there are no reports of anyone dying in the accident," Dawn reported, quoting the rescue team.
This accident happened just a few days after another train incident. On July 28, three coaches of the Jaffar Express derailed near Shikarpur in Sindh province. At first, people thought there had been an explosion on the tracks, and one person was hurt.
Sukkur Railways Divisional Superintendent Jamshaid Alam told Dawn that the Jaffar Express, traveling from Peshawar to Quetta, was affected by what seemed like an explosion near Sultanpur. "After the blast, train services were stopped," Alam said, adding that passengers "had a tough time because of the derailment."
However, the Ministry of Railways said on July 29 that the derailment was actually caused by a technical problem, not an explosion. Officials explained that the loud noise from the derailment may have led people to believe there was an explosion.
According to Dawn, the ministry also said, "A little-known terrorist group tried to take credit for the incident and claimed it was an attack. This claim is false and just an example of taking advantage of the situation.
