2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine: MicroRNA Discovery Earns Ambros and Ruvkun Top Honors

Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun Win 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine for MicroRNA Discovery

Scientists Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering microRNA and how it helps regulate genes, the Nobel Committee announced on Monday.

The Nobel Prize in medicine is chosen by Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, and the winners receive 11 million Swedish crowns (about $1.1 million). The Medicine Prize is the first of the Nobel Prizes to be awarded yearly, known as some of the most prestigious honors in science, literature, and humanitarian work. The other five Nobel Prizes will be announced in the coming days.

The Nobel Prizes were established in the will of Alfred Nobel, a Swedish inventor and businessman. The prizes have been awarded since 1901 for significant achievements in science, literature, and peace. The Nobel Prize in Economics was added later. Various institutions are responsible for awarding the different prizes, with the Peace Prize being the only one given in Oslo instead of Stockholm, likely due to the political union between Sweden and Norway when Nobel wrote his will.

In 2023, the Nobel Prize in medicine went to Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman for their research that made COVID-19 vaccines possible, helping to fight the pandemic.

Previous winners of the Nobel Prize in medicine include well-known scientists like Ivan Pavlov in 1904, famous for his experiments with dogs and behavior, and Alexander Fleming, who won in 1945 for discovering penicillin.

The science, literature, and economics Nobel Prizes are awarded on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death, at a ceremony in Stockholm. This is followed by a grand banquet at Stockholm City Hall. The Peace Prize is awarded on the same day in a separate ceremony in Oslo.
