French Rail Network Sabotaged, Causing Major Disruptions Ahead of Olympics

France's national rail operator announced on Friday that its high-speed rail network was sabotaged, causing major train service disruptions. This happened on the same day as the Olympics' opening ceremony, a high-risk event.

The sabotage affected train lines in western, northern, and eastern France, disrupting domestic trains and international ones to Belgium and London via the Channel Tunnel. French authorities are investigating, with national police leading the effort.

The rail operator, SNCF, called these acts "malicious" but didn't give details on the sabotage. French officials condemned the disruptions, which occurred just hours before the Olympic ceremony. The Games are taking place across France, but there's no clear link between the rail incidents and the Olympics.

French sports minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra was outraged, calling the vandalism "completely appalling" and said targeting the games was like targeting France.

Transport minister Patrice Vergriete called it a "massive attack" and an "outrageous criminal act," warning of serious consequences for weekend rail traffic, especially in northern, eastern, and northwestern France, where train connections were cut in half.

SNCF's CEO, Jean-Pierre Farandou, said 800,000 passengers were affected. The timing is especially bad as many French families are starting their summer vacations, increasing travel demand.
