Heavy Rain in Delhi Brings Relief from Intense Heat

Heavy rain in parts of Delhi today brought relief from the record heat and humidity. Heavy showers in Munirka, Sarita Vihar, and other areas of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts more rain later in the day.

The IMD announced on X that a thunderstorm with light to moderate rain and heavy rain in some areas, along with winds of 20-40 km/h, will continue in and around many parts of Delhi and NCR, as well as Panipat, Gohana, Gannaur, Sonipat, Kharkhoda (Haryana), and Shamli, Kandhla, Khatauli, Sakoti Tanda, Hastinapur, Baraut, Daurala, Bagpat, Meerut, Khekra, Modinagar, Sikandrabad, Bulandshahar, Jahangirabad, Anupshahar (U.P.) over the next two hours.

The long-awaited rain finally arrived in the National Capital Region (NCR) after weeks of intense heatwave.

The region has recorded nine heatwave days in June this year, compared to none in 2023 and 2022, and just one in 2021. Heavy rain in Delhi-NCR slowed traffic in many areas. The IMD reported that light to moderate rain and gusty winds of 30-40 km/h were expected in parts of Delhi. The weather change is due to a western disturbance.

According to Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather Services, the monsoon is expected to reach Delhi by the end of this week, around June 29 or 30. The IMD has not confirmed the exact date yet. Historically, the monsoon usually arrives in Delhi between June 27 and June 29, with last year's rains beginning on June 26 and the first monsoon rainfall in 2022 recorded on June 30.
