15 Killed, 19,000 Trapped as Heavy Rains Batter Sri Lanka; Schools Closed Today

At least 15 people have died and over 19,000 from more than 5,000 families were trapped over the weekend due to heavy monsoon rains in Sri Lanka, authorities reported on Sunday. The downpours, exceeding 300 mm, caused flash floods, uprooted trees, unleashed strong winds, lightning, and landslides.

According to the Disaster Management Center (DMC), casualties were reported in seven districts, including the capital Colombo. 20 out of 25 districts have been severely affected by heavy rains. 4,000 houses were partially damaged and 28 homes were completely damaged.

The Sri Lankan Army has deployed seven teams with boats for rescue operations. The Air Force has three helicopters ready for emergencies in the affected areas. Expecting more rain and flooding, the Ministry of Education has closed all schools on Monday.

The Ministry of Power and Energy has cut off electricity in several areas as a safety measure. The National Building Research Centre has issued red alerts for landslides in four districts.

Many flights to Colombo's main international airport were redirected to a smaller airport.

Three members of a family died in flooding outside Colombo. Landslide warnings were issued in nine districts. DMC Director Pradeep Kodippili warned of increasing flood risk in Colombo and the south.

Earlier, six people drowned in floods in Colombo and Rathnapura on Sunday. Three others died in house collapses, and one person was killed by a falling tree.

Since mid-May, Sri Lanka has been facing severe weather due to heavy monsoon rains. The DMC issued flood alerts in many areas, urging families in low-lying areas to move to higher ground.
