An 18-year-old student committed suicide in Kota

In Kota, Rajasthan, another student who was preparing for competitive exams has taken their own life, according to the police. This is the second such incident in January, highlighting the increasing problem of exam-related stress among students attending coaching classes.

On Monday, an 18-year-old student, who was getting ready for the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination), reportedly hanged herself at her home in this coaching hub. She left a note saying sorry to her parents and referring to herself as a "loser."

“Mom, Dad I can't do JEE. So I will commit suicide,” said the note written in English, the police said. She was writing the JEE exam in a couple of days.

The police mentioned that her dad works as a security guard at a bank, and she was the oldest of three sisters. The incident happened in the area covered by the Borkhera police station in Kota, which is known for a high number of suicides among those getting ready for tough exams.

The teenager finished her 12th grade last year but didn't get good marks. Therefore, she was taking practice exams and getting ready for the JEE.

She was good at her studies and spent seven or eight hours on them every day.

Niharika's grandmother knocked on her room door at around 10 am. When there was no answer, she got worried and alerted the family. They discovered Niharika hanging from the ventilation window above the door.

This sad event comes right after the suicide of another student, Mohammed Zaid, in Kota. Zaid, who originally came from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, was preparing for the NEET entrance examination.

Because of a rise in student suicides last year, the government took action by giving guidelines to reduce the pressure on coaching students. Instructions were given to coaching institutes and local authorities to protect students from feeling depressed and stressed.

Last year, 26 students reportedly took their own lives in Kota. In Kota, students from all over the country come to prepare for tough exams like the National Entrance Exam (JEE) for entry into leading engineering colleges.

More than 200,000 students come to Kota every year to get ready for exams such as JEE and NEET.
