14 Killed, 50 Injured as Passenger Train Crashes Into Another on Howrah-Chennai Line in Andhra Pradesh. The Railways said the two trains were the Visakhapatnam-Palasa passenger and the Visakhapatnam-Rayagada passenger special with the numbers 08532 and 08504, respectively.

A statement mentioned that the second train crashed into the Palasa-bound train at around 7 p.m., suggesting that human error might be the reason, as the Rayagada-bound train possibly missed the signal.

Sourabh Prasad, the divisional railway manager of the Waltair division, stated that the collision occurred at approximately 7:10 p.m. He added, "The Vishakhapatnam-Palasa train was stationary on the track between Alamanda and Kantakpalli railway stations."

The crash made four compartments of the second train derail onto the nearby track. It also caused the electric lines to go out, plunging the area into darkness, which made the rescue efforts difficult. The DRM stated, "Once we learned about the incident, the local police, National Disaster Response Force teams, and revenue authorities quickly arrived to start rescue and relief operations."

The railways declared that they had canceled, diverted, or ended at least 13 trains as the tracks were blocked due to the incident.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed sorrow over the deaths and conveyed his condolences to the families. He visited the site on Monday and later went to local hospitals to meet with the injured, assuring them of free treatment at government-run facilities.

"The government will support them until they fully recover. I have instructed the authorities to ensure they receive proper medical attention and immediate financial assistance to the families of those who lost their lives and the injured," he wrote in a post on X.
