Morocco Earthquake: Earthquake: At Least 1,037 Killed



"A 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Morocco, as reported by state media, has resulted in over 1,037 deaths and 1,204 injuries."


"The earthquake, located 44 miles (71 kilometers) southwest of the popular tourist destination Marrakesh and occurring at a depth of 18.5 kilometers, struck at 11:11 PM (23:11 GMT), as reported by the US Geological Survey."


"Marrakesh hospitals were overwhelmed with many injured people, and local media described it as the strongest earthquake ever in the country's history."


"The Ministry statement reports 1,037 confirmed deaths and 1,204 injuries, with 721 people in critical condition."


"Marrakech and nearby areas were hit the hardest, with some buildings completely destroyed. The tremors affected provinces including Al Haouz, Ouarzazate, Marrakech, Azilal, Chichaoua, and Taroudant. Officials advised residents to stay calm."


"The earthquake was felt in nearby Algeria, but the Algerian Civil Defence reported no damage or injuries."


"Due to the risk of strong aftershocks, the Moroccan government advised people not to return to their homes, leading many to spend the night outdoors."
