Manipur Violence : Two Women Paraded Naked & Sexually Assaulted

Manipur Violence: Man Seen In Video Parading Women Naked In Manipur Arrested

Tensions rose in the hills of Manipur after a video surfaced on social media on May 4 showing men from one community marching two women naked from opposite sides.

A case of gang rape has been registered and two people have been arrested, the police said, adding that others will be arrested soon.

Conflicts between the Kuki tribes and the majority of Meitei led to their total separation. 60,000 people have been evacuated and at least 130 have died.

The two women, who are Kukis, were attacked by men of the Meitei group.

Police say the attack on the women took place on May 4, but it really only made news on Thursday after the video started going viral on the internet through Social Media. The central government has asked all virtual entertainment companies to delete the video from their social media platform.

The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (IDLF) said in a statement that the women belonging to the Kuki-Zo tribal community were assaulted in a village in the Kangpokpi district. It is also said that the women were gang-raped.

Stating that the alleged incident has humiliated 140 crores Indians, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the law will operate with its full force and no culprit will escape. "My heart is filled with pain and anger," he told reporters ahead of the monsoon session of parliament, amid criticism from opposition parties for not speaking up on ethnic violence in the northeastern state.

The government was ready for a discussion on the Manipur issue, but the opposition disrupted the proceedings, making it clear that it has decided not to let parliament work, Union Minister Piyush Goyal claimed Thursday.
