Himachal Pradesh: 5 killed in landslides



At least five people were killed as heavy rains lashed Himachal Pradesh on Sunday, triggering floods and landslides that swept away roads and bridges.


As various roads and highways have been damaged due to rains, all schools and colleges in the state have been given a two-day holiday from Monday. More than 800 roads including 6 national highways were closed across the state.


With all major rivers in flood, the local weather office on July 9 issued a fresh red alert for very heavy rain (above 204 mm) in 10 out of 12 districts, except the tribal districts of Kinnaur and Lahaul, and Spiti.


In the past 36 hours, 14 major landslides and 13 flash floods were reported, while more than 700 roads were closed, the state emergency operations center said.


Larji hydroelectric project located on the banks of river Beas has been flooded and water has entered the power plant. As a precautionary measure, the power supply to the project has been temporarily cut off.


In response to the heavy rain overnight, Panto Dam officials opened the floodgates to release excess water. Due to this, the water level of the Beas River has risen significantly and crossed the danger level.


A family lost three members when debris fell on their house in Panevalli village in Shimla district. A woman was killed in the landslide in Lankadbeer village, Kullu, and another person in  Kakkiyan in Chamba.



On Sunday afternoon, a cloudburst caused severe damage in the Pulga area of the Manikaran Valley in the Kullu district. The road leading to Chandratal Lake was closed by a landslide in Lahaul-Spiti, stranding approximately 200 people. The district administration is working to ensure their safe evacuation.


Train services have also been suspended on the Kalka-Shimla traditional route and the Ambala-Una route. Various houses, shops, and cowsheds in different parts of the state were damaged.

On Sunday, officials led by Mandi District Disaster Management Authority Chairman and District Collector Arindam Chaudhary met officials to discuss the situation.


According to Chaudhuri, till 10 am on Sunday, information indicated that 173 roads were closed in the district and efforts were being made to reopen them soon. The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rainfall in the district for the next 24 hours.


Damage assessment and relief work is being done with the help of the National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force.
