On Monday morning, on the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express, Chetan Singh, a Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable, fired 12 rounds from his automatic service weapon and killed Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Tikaram Meena, and three other passengers.
The incident took place between Vapi and Borivali stations around 5 am.
As per statements from Indian Railways officials, Singh, aged 33, has been taken into custody and is presently under the control of the railway police.
They said Singh,33, got down at Borivali by pulling the train's alarm chain but later surrendered at Bayander police station.
According to officials, the incident took place around 5 am when the train reached Vaitharna railway station, about two hours away from Mumbai.
The incident occurred on the B5 coach of Jaipur Express (train number 12956).
Inspector General of Western Railway and Principal Chief Security Commissioner PC Sinha told reporters, “Constable Chetan Singh was short-tempered and suffering from mental problems. He first shot his superior and then those who came before him”. "He was back from leave," Sinha said.
Singh, who served in the RPF for over 12 years, was stationed at the Lower Parel workstation. After taking a 12-day leave, he returned from his hometown Hadhras in Uttar Pradesh on July 18 and was posted on escort duty.
