Bus accident in Madhya Pradesh kills 15 UP workers on their way home for Diwali

Fifteen people were killed and around 35 injured when a passenger bus rammed into a parked truck in Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district on Friday night, an official said on Saturday.

The bus, carrying around 100 people, was on its way to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh when it rammed into a truck parked near Suhagi Pahari in Rewa last night.

The accident took place on October 21, 2022, at around 11:30 pm.

According to the police, 20 of the 40 people injured in the accident have been admitted to Prayagraj Hospital in Uttar Pradesh. "All the occupants of the bus were residents of Uttar Pradesh," Rewa Superintendent of Police Naveen Bhasin Said.

Rewa Superintendent of Police Navneet Bhasin said most of the bus passengers were laborers from Uttar Pradesh who boarded the bus from Katni in Madhya Pradesh.

Officials said the workers had come from Hyderabad to Katni in a separate bus, saying they were going home for Diwali.

According to reports, some passers-by informed the police about the accident. Police said they have registered a case and are investigating to find out the exact cause of the accident.

Rewa District Collector Manoj Pushp, who reached the spot, said that the lorry driver suddenly braked and the bus coming behind hit it, causing a huge loss of life. Pushp said the rescue operation has been completed and all the injured had been shifted to the hospital.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed condolences to the victims of the accident and assured that the injured would be given the best treatment. Chauhan dialed Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath about the accident. The chief minister also said that the bodies of the deceased would be brought to Prayagraj by the central government.
