Bengaluru rains: 2 km traffic jam, drinking water supply disrupted

Heavy rains lashed Bengaluru on Monday evening, resulting in flooding and several kilometers of traffic jams. The Bengaluru Drinking Water and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has warned that water supply will be disrupted in many parts of the city today and tomorrow.

The Board has arranged temporary tankers free of charge. These will be provided to areas where the piped water supply has been stopped.

Chief Minister  Basavaraj Bommai visits Bengaluru Water Board's TK Halli unit in Mandya district to manage water supply to Bengaluru city following heavy rains on Sunday night.

"BWSSB chairman, engineers, secretary of urban development department have already been sent to the unit. Mandya district officials are busy draining water from the water station. The situation is expected to be under control by evening. The technical team is working on emergency mode to restart the machines. I will visit and give necessary instructions," Mr. Pomi told news agency ANI.

Schools and colleges in many parts of Bengaluru remain closed, with heavy rains and flooding, and waterlogging disrupting roads, shifting operations to online classes.

Bengaluru's Yeshwanthpur, Malleshwaram, Seshadripuram, Okaladara, Srirampur, Mathikere, and many other areas are expected to experience disruption of drinking water supply for two days due to heavy rains.

Many residential areas have suffered considerable damage with houses coming from many parts of Bangalore collapsing and roofs being blown off.

Due to dilapidated roads and heavy waterlogging, traffic jams of up to 2 kilometers have been created in many parts of the city. Also, the Karnataka government had to send boats to rescue people caught in heavy floods.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has announced financial assistance of Rs 300 crore to provide relief for the damage caused by heavy rains in Bengaluru and to help the victims.

"The recent rains in Bengaluru are unusual. The  BS Bommai-led government is actively monitoring the issue and working hard to resolve it at the earliest. A thriving city that has continued to grow for decades may have to face some infrastructure issues." IT Minister Dr. Ashwathnarayan CN said.
