Israel-Gaza: Ceasefire holds overnight after days of violence

Egypt's brokered ceasefire followed three days of violence with Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and militants targeting Israel and firing rockets into Israel.

In May 2021, at least 44 Palestinians died in the heaviest explosion since the 11-day conflict.

The most recent brutality began with Israel's attacks on sites in the Gaza Strip, which its military expressed in light of the dangers of an attack group. This followed a long period of pressure after Israel seized a senior PIJ area in the concerned West Bank.

The ceasefire announced by both sides on Sunday evening came about 50 hours after the escalation began when Israel launched what it called a preemptive strike on Islamic Jihad militant group targets in Gaza.

At least 44 Palestinians, including 15 children and some militants, were killed in the violence, according to Palestinian officials.

Gaza's health ministry blamed "Israel's occupation" for the deaths of Palestinians and the injuries of more than 300 others.

The Israeli Prime Minister's Office thanked Egypt for its mediation efforts but warned that "the State of Israel reserves the right to respond strongly" if the ceasefire is violated.

The terms of the deal were not immediately made public. However, Egypt's official state news agency said that in a push for a ceasefire, Cairo was working to secure the release of an Islamic jihadist captured by Israel six days ago and the transfer of a Palestinian prisoner on hunger strike in an Israeli prison to hospital for medical treatment.

"The United States remains committed to our ironclad commitment to Israel's security and will remain fully engaged in the coming days to promote peace. We will continue to work with partners to improve the quality of life for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip."
