Kashmir separatist leader Yasin Malik has been convicted of aiding and abetting terrorists
A special NIA court in Delhi on Thursday convicted Kashmir separatist leader Yasin Malik in a case related to terrorism and separatist activities that disrupted the Kashmir Valley in 2017. Earlier, the J&K separatist leader pleaded guilty under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Yasin Malik has been accused of plotting, waging war against the country, other illegal activities, and disturbing the peace in Kashmir.
On the last day of the trial, Malik told the court that he had not fought the charges against him under Sections 16 (Terrorism Act), 17 (fundraising for terrorist acts), and 18 (conspiracy to commit terrorist acts). 20 (being a member of a terrorist gang or organization) UAPA and Sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 124-A (sedition) of the Indian Penal Code.
Special Judge Praveen Singh had earlier said that Malik and others were "primary" direct recipients of terrorist funds.
The case is linked to various terrorist organizations - Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Hizbul-Mujahideen (HM), Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in Jammu and Kashmir. Carrying out terrorist and separatist activities to destabilize the situation.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has summoned Indian officials to the Foreign Ministry and handed over a request condemning Islamabad for framing "fabricated allegations" against Yassin Malik, PTI reported.
The Indian side also expressed Pakistan's deep concern over Malik's imprisonment in Tihar Jail since 2019 under "inhumane conditions".
Pakistan's Foreign Office has called on the Indian government to release Malik from all "unsubstantiated" charges, release him immediately from prison, reunite him with his family, restore his health and return to normal life.
