Pfizer says the pill will be effective in protecting against Covid 19

Pfizer says the pill will be effective in protecting against Covid 19.

The company said on Tuesday that the pill, made by Pfizer, the popular Covid-19 vaccine provider, could be very effective in protecting against the corona virus.

Citing a laboratory test, the company announced that Paxlovid, an experimental antiviral pill, may also be effective against the rapidly spreading Omicron variant worldwide.

In clinical trials, Paxlovit showed nearly 90% effectiveness in preventing hospital admissions and deaths in high-risk patients, Pfizer said, reflecting the results of a small-scale trial announced last month.

Those results prompted the company to seek the approval of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to become the first widely available oral medication to fight the corona virus.

Regulators in the UK last month approved the use of Merck/Ridgeback two-day tablet Molnupiravir, for the elderly and at-risk patients, although its approval in the United States has declined amid safety concerns.

Pfizer hopes Tuesday's announcement will strengthen its case with the FDA, which will allow early U.S. approval and that affected Americans will have access to the pill a year earlier.

"Our oral antiviral candidate, if approved or recognized, could have a meaningful impact on the lives of many because the data further support Paxlovit's performance in hospitalization and death and show a significant reduction in virus loads," said Albert Borla. In a statement to the CEO of the company.

Joe Biden said he was encouraged by the company's data and that his administration had ordered enough pills to treat 10 million Americans.

None of those on the test given Paxlovid died compared with 12 placebo recipients.

Pfizer tablets are needed at regular intervals. They reduced the risk of being admitted to hospital within three days of onset of symptoms to 89% and 88% within five days.

Pfizer's medicine works differently. It is part of a class of drugs currently known as protein inhibitors used to treat HIV, hepatitis C and other viruses.

The U.S. government has already received 10 million studies of Pfizer for $ 5.29 billion.
