India will achieve net zero emissions by 2070, says PM Modi

By 2030 50% of energy will be obtained on the renewable path, he tells COP26.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the COP26 summit in Glasgow on Monday that India would achieve net zero emissions by 2070.

As of Monday, India was the only major emitter who did not guarantee a deadline to reach net zero or a year to ensure that its net carbon dioxide emissions were zero.

By 2030, India will ensure that 50% of its energy comes from renewable energy sources. India will reduce carbon emissions by one billion tonnes by 2030. India will reduce its emissions by less than 45% per unit GDP. India will also install 500 gigawatts of renewable energy by 2030, which will increase by 50 gigawatts from existing targets, the Prime Minister said.

In a sense of climate justice, he said, rich developed countries should provide at least $ 1 trillion in climate funding to help developing and vulnerable countries.
