13 U.S. service members and at least 90 Afghans were killed in an attack on Kabul airport
Authorities say the attack was carried out by gunmen following a suicide bombing at the airport's Abe Gate. Authorities say another bomb exploded near a hotel outside the airport. The Pentagon says 18 U.S. service members have been injured.
The attack was the worst day for the US military in Afghanistan since 2011, and came five days before the Biden administration's full withdrawal from the country. The military expects more attacks, Marine Corps Gen. Frank McKenzie told reporters.
On Thursday evening, President Biden said he was "heartbroken" by the violence and promised to retaliate for the attacks, while continuing to push for evictions.
"We will hunt you down and pay you," Biden told the White House. He has instructed his national security advisers to develop plans in response to the attack.
U.S. officials have blamed the Islamic State's regional wing for the violence. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, according to a statement issued by its news agency.
The Taliban shot dead one of the group's leaders in Afghanistan just hours after capturing Kabul prison, a staunch enemy of the Islamic State. The two Islamist groups have been fighting each other in Afghanistan since 2015, especially in the eastern part of the country. On Tuesday, a Taliban spokesman told Iranian state media that the Islamic State was not in Afghanistan.
"We strongly condemn this heinous incident and will take every step to bring the perpetrators to justice," said Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen.
