Cytomegalovirus (CMV) found in Covid patients
As the world prepares itself against the new and growing Delta Plus strain of the corona virus, India has already registered a new type of virus among those infected with Covd-19.
Five cases of cytomegalovirus (CMV) have been reported in Govt patients at Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi, the hospital said in a written statement.
This is the first report from India of five cases of cytomegalovirus (CMV) related rectal bleeding in patients without Govt immunity, ”the report from Ganga Ram Hospital read.
A new type of virus enters the body when the human body is immune after drugs used to protect the body from the deadly corona virus and COVID-19. Steroids used in the treatment of corona virus suppress the immune system of patients and expose the human body to abnormal infections.
One such opportunistic infection is the CMV virus. The cytomegalovirus is present in 80 to 90 per cent of Indian symptoms. Clinical presentation with secondary symptoms to CMV is commonly seen in patients with compromised immunity, ”the report said.
As of now, all the cases have been detected in Delhi-NCR. Out of a total of five, four patients had gastrointestinal bleeding, i.e. bleeding in the stool, and the fifth patient had intestinal obstruction. "Both of them had massive bleeding, one of which required emergency life-saving surgery in the form of removal of the right side of the colon, and one of them died of massive bleeding and severe covit chest disease," the report added.
Anil Arora, a professor at Ganga Ram Hospital, said three patients had been treated with the antiviral drug of ganciclovir.
