January 1 FasTag deadline
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday that fast tags would be mandatory for vehicles from January 1, 2021.
Addressing a virtual process on Thursday, he said Fastak would be useful for travelers because they do not have to stop at toll plazas to pay. Besides, it will save time and fuel, he said.
Mandatory tagging will help ensure that vehicles pass unimpeded through customs as tolls are made electronically.
According to the Federal Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, from December 1, 2017, Fastak will be required to register new four-wheelers, provided by the vehicle manufacturer or their distributor. It was further ordered that the fitness certificate renewal should be done only after the faststack for transport vehicles is fitted. With regard to nationally licensed vehicles, the fit of Fastest has been mandatory since October 1, 2019.
An amendment to FORM 51 (Certificate of Insurance) mandates that valid FASTag is mandatory when obtaining new third party insurance, in which the details of the FASTag ID are captured. This applies to April 1, 2021.
