Cyclone Nivar Live Updates

 

Hurricane Nivar is expected to cause landslides late on Wednesday night, blowing between Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry coasts between Karaikal and Mamallapuram at speeds of 120-130 kmph and 145 kmph.


Officials in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, which are expected to be affected by Hurricane Nivar, said precautionary measures were being taken as the central government had assured all necessary assistance.


The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that Hurricane Nivar in the southwestern Bay of Bengal moved towards the west-northwest at a speed of 16 kmph in the last six hours and intensified.


As of 2.30 pm on November 25, Cyclone Nivar lay focused over southwest Bay of Bengal close to scope 11.2°N and longitude 81.0°E, around 90 km east-southeast of Cuddalore, around 150 km east-southeast of Puducherry and 220 km south-southeast of Chennai.


With only essential services expected to continue, the Tamil Nadu government today declared a public holiday. Also, a public holiday has been declared in 13 districts of Tamil Nadu on Thursday, while the Puducherry government has declared a public holiday for government and private schools till Saturday.
