NASA Has Found Water on Moon

NASA today announced the discovery of water molecules inside a sunlight abyss on the surface of the moon. The discovery could have implications for future astronauts, according to NPR's Jeff Broomfeel.

Sophia discovered water molecules (H2O) in the Clavius crater, one of the largest visible craters on Earth, located in the southern hemisphere of the Moon. Previous observations of the lunar surface have detected some form of hydrogen, but have not been able to distinguish between water and its close chemical relative hydroxyl (OH). Data from this location are trapped in one cubic meter of soil scattered over the lunar surface at concentrations ranging from 100 to 412 parts per million - equivalent to 12 ounces of bottled water. The results are published in the latest issue of Nature Astronomy.

As the world’s largest aerospace laboratory, the Sofia is a modified 747 that flies high in the atmosphere, providing its nearly 9-foot telescope with a clear view of the universe and objects in our solar system. Flying over 99% of the ambiguous water vapor in the atmosphere, SOFIA observes infrared wavelengths and can detect invisible phenomena with visible light.
